From Mom and Dad to Just Mom

My dad just died in a sudden, freak accident while traveling on the other side of the world. While we are all still reeling in shock, we are as well supported as we can be with the many, many immediate logistical concerns. I keep coming back to how my mom's life is going to change in the medium-long term. If you or your loved one has ever suffered the sudden loss of a beloved long-time spouse, how did your life change afterwards, and how best would have you/they wanted to be supported?
They were married for over 40 years and basically joined at the hip. Late 60s, still pretty active, driving themselves everywhere (my dad did most of the driving), living in a big old house (my dad did all of the maintenance) that they'd been talking about downsizing for years.
Mostly I worry about my mom's tendency to be a bit of a social shut in, they were a reversal of the stereotypical boomer couple in that I reckon my dad did 90% of the social coordination for the two of them. My mom's never been a big talker, and never confided in anyone but my dad. We don't come from a culture where therapy is really a thing. She does have a large extended family but they are spread out all over the world (and, well, also getting old). I guess I don't have a very well-defined question here (aside from the one above the fold) but am more seeking some reassurance that things will be different, but eventually okay. Thank you. |
