I have been given an opportunity to do whatever gardening I like in the south-facing front yard of my kid's newly purchased home. Where do I even start?
I live in Central Sweden. I am a hobby gardener on the tiniest scale imaginable. We are talking indoor plants and a balcony with five strawberry plants and two pumpkin plants that are a complete experiment because it's a balcony! I won't get access to the property until September. As we are in the northern hemisphere, I figure I am mostly going to be planning for next spring, putting down something to kill weeds between September and planting time, and figuring out goals, priorities, and the steps to take (and in what order) to get the kind of garden I would like to have.
That includes flowers, a plum tree, fruit bushes (such as raspberries), native plants and a small greenhouse for vegetables. Also, I have a couple of years to get this all established and then I will have to turn it over to my kid and simply visit it from time to time. So passionate gardeners of MetaFilter, please help this newbie (and lazy) gardener develop a path to a greener future filled with a relatively easy to maintain landscape. All tips, resources, and personal experiences are welcome. |
