Car with "unsolvable" mechanical problems?

My wife has a 2011 Honda Pilot with just over 100k miles on it. Recently, while driving, the electrical system went kaput, and she lost power steering, power brakes, and ALL the dashboard warning likes came on. So, we towed it to our mechanic. However, after working on it for two weeks, he finally told us, "I've never had to tell a customer this, but I don't know how to fix it." What should I do?

A few more details... The mechanic immediately suspected it was a PCM, so he ordered a new one and replaced it. But that didn't fix the problem. He tried everything else he could think of, including numerous calls to Honda for help, checking relays, etc. But ultimately - nothing he tried worked.

I have great trust in the mechanic; we've been going to him for years, with multiple cars, and he's always done right by us. In this case - he feels so bad about being unable to fix the car that he's not charging us ANYTHING, including for the new PCM that he ordered.

I asked if I should bring it to the Honda dealer, and he said, "You can, and *maybe* they'll fix it. But they won't be shy about running up labor and parts charges, and I wouldn't be surprised if you end up with a several-thousand-dollar bill and they *still* can't fix it."

"OK, so then what should I do?"

"Maybe bring it to another dealer and cross your fingers that they'll give you a $1,000 as a trade-in."

Aside from this mechanical problem - the engine actually runs, and the car is otherwise in great shape. I think the blue-book value is over $8,000. Is the car really effectively worthless?

Any idea what options we have?
