My son is about to start at Dual language (90% spanish in classes) school this fall. What tips do you have for us as parents who aren't fluent speakers? (please want to hear parents who have been through this, not someone who is making assumptions) What I'm worried about: big gap between the native speakers and non native (in terms of community-parents and kids interacting), the gentrification changing the dynamics of the school and making some of the people feel less welcome. Community is really really important to our family so I'm thinking about this alot

My wife and I are not fluent but can hold conversations in Spanish and ok at reading. The school is around 60% spanish speakers, vast majority being immigrants from Central America with parents with limited English comms. The non spanish speakers are majority upper middle class whites or white adjacent like myself.

I grew up in a racially homogenized but mixed income school system and at least through elementary my friends were from all walks of life. This changed alot starting when classes got separated and folks went to college and career, so 99% of my friends are also all upper middle class college educated.

My son goes to mixed race and income preschool now and seems like his friends are all the other upper middle class/white adjacent. I'm not super surprised-- all the social non school events are parent run and even with a WhatsApp it's all the upper middle parents. But the school we are going to makes a huge effort on this so I know it's important to them.

I organized a pool meetup this summer through an incoming WhatsApp I organized for incoming kindergarteners and maybe like 80% of the upper middle class kids showed up. Not a single spanish speaking kid or non upper middle middle class kid. It was great for me to see at least some kids meet each other but felt like I missed the mark--(I didnt translate any of my marketing to spanish, like some of the parents do in the larger WhatsApp for one).
