Curling scoreboard question

I've been watching olympics curling, and I have a question about the scoreboards...

There's this odd mark on the curling scoreboard at the olympics that I can't recall seeing anywhere else. If you look at the scoreboards, the design/layout from left to right is this:
- A color graphic indicating which team is shooting
- The team/nation and flag
- An icon indicating if the team has their timeout left
- The grid of 10 sides
- The score

There is an additional star/asterisk graphic that appears between the timeout icon and the grid, and I have no clue what it indicates.

It isn't hammer, as that's indicated by a big dot on the end of the end grid and it jumps between the two teams as necessary. This star/asterisk thing is only on one team and stays on that team all throughout the game.

What does this star/asterisk indicate
