Midnight question about non-american fantasy fiction

When I watch Hollywood fantasy fiction, I can usually tell where the grey line is between "This is a pretty accurate portrait of how we think history looked" vs "Yeah this is total fantasy." For example, Braveheart and Gladiator are "realistic" history, whereas Game of Thrones is obviously "fantastic" history. However, in thinking of Japanese shows, or the little African literature I've read, I don't know what those cultures would consider "realistic" vs. "fantastic" fiction. Can you please give me some examples?
