In the scenes where the characters discuss Catholicism—specifically the doctrine of papal infallibility—would a native speaker immediately recognize the errors in what they are saying? I feel that if a reader doesn't catch those mistakes, Joyce's true intent won't come across; what do you think? Or is the work difficult for native speakers to understand as well
