I recently happened across two very different books I really liked--Martha Gellhorn's Travels With Myself and Another and Frans Bengtsson's The Long Ships--and I'm looking for more of the same.
I loved Travels With Myself and Another for its clear mid-century (Hemingway-adjacent?) language and its seen-a-lot-but-not-yet-cynical attitude. She's world-weary but still somehow empathetic, fiery when necessary, and goes places you couldn't pay me to visit. Plus terrible trips are always entertaining to read about (though I have already covered most of the classics of that genre). The closest I've come to this one so far was Beryl Markham's West with the Night, or maybe Alan Booth's books on Japan.
The Long Ships is just a rip-roaring good read, made me feel 12 again. Historical fiction done right: great characters, humor, adventure, plus a kind-of history lesson along the way. I wish this was an Aubrey-Maturin-length series.
