Similar to Miklós Jancsó's The Round Up from the year before, this was another harrowing war drama, equally brutal, senseless - and beautiful. It sees the battles between the Bolsheviks and the White Army of 1917 as a cruel 'Hunger Games' where both sides kill their enemies and supporters without any regards or reservations. The upper hand changes from scene to scene, and the remorseless execution of everybody on the screen is equally pointless. There are no good guys here; they are all exactly the same.
