How do movies portray scientific discovery?

I've been thinking about movies I've seen which portray scientific discovery, and I have a recollection that they often turn to a visual trope of atoms, stars, numbers etc. flying around the characters' heads in a rather reductive way, which is probably not how those scientists actually came to their discoveries. What language do movies use to portray these discoveries?

I'm thinking of movies like Oppenheimer, The Theory of Everything, and A Beautiful Mind. I'm sure there are others. And frankly, it's been some time since I've seen these movies, so my memory of these movies' depictions may be off! But I have the idea my head that these and other prominent movies about scientists keep going back to a simplistic trope: the scientist reaches a particularly thorny limit of their investigation, some visual representation of their topic at head is intercut into the scene or literally is pasted over or around the actor's face, and then they figure it out.

Is this actually how these movies do it? I want to go back to these movies to see again how they depicted discovery, but that will take some time to watch all of the movies so if anyone directly remembers how it works in these or similar movies, I'd appreciate it. And if there are other movies that depict scientific discovery in uniquely creative or uncreative ways, I'd love to know about them!
