Gripping kids Book recommendations please!

Kiddo just finished reading Lord of the Flies, Bridge to Terabithia, and Into thin Air (yes that one). What other books can we throw at him? We're getting past the saccharine and into real life I guess, so I was thinking The Outsiders, Number the Stars but what else? We've read The Hobbit and Roald Dahl; but we're getting past that age I think. Thanks !!
