Here's my take: She looks like a plastic doll. She is massively, hugely, insanely popular; I don't know but my hallucination is that it's all teen girls. I have asked a few people in my milieu and gotten blank stares: "Oh, she's that billionaire." "Oh, she's pop music." (So are Be Theatles. So is Nirvana. etc)
She has sold more records than god, she is massively, hugely popular, clearly she is talented. I'd like to have six songs from metafilter ppl.
I am a person who has gotten much of my music collection by purchasing something I find in my hands. For maybe 3-4 years I bought fistfuls of cd's from a used CD shop here in town, sometimes on rec of clerk in store, sometimes just because. Larry Monroe -- the best disc jockey I've ever learned from -- was huge in helping me. A song on the radio will get me to call the station, get the artist/album, go buy it.
There has to be something to this artist, this Taylor Swift. I (honestly) cannot imagine what it might be. But you have a song of hers that rocks the hell out of you. Even if it's folkie maybe it's got a good grab on you, it comes on and you stomp the gas and be happy. Maybe love songs that ring true?
