In other words, please tell me what I want... I need a new laptop computer because my old one can't be updated anymore and that affects access to bank accounts. My old criteria for choosing a laptop don't apply anymore. Maybe I can get something more interesting?

In the past 30 years, I have always bought some kind of mid-range macintosh laptop -- these last about 10 years before something goes wrong. In addition to their longevity, I used to need specific software for my research that was only available on the mac. I needed them to work ok with fairly computationally intensive tasks. I also liked that they had good track pads and reasonable keyboards.

Now I am just using standard office software and the internet, so I don't need anything especially great for computation or a specific operating system. I am interested in keeping more notes on the computer. I know I still want to have a comfortable physical interface (keys that have some movement and clickiness, a trackpad that is responsive, a matte screen when it is available) which does not describe every laptop. I'm not interested in paying more than $2K US. I don't want a Chromebook.

It occurred to me that I could get an interesting laptop now that I don't have the same criteria. Maybe one of those that has a screen that can be used like a tablet? Maybe the Asus Zenbook Duo? Or the Lenovo yoga book 9i? I like the idea of marking up a pdf by hand or making a template for note-taking by hand. I don't know if it's possible to then OCR handwritten notes to edit them digitally, but I'd like that.

What else is nifty these days? What do you think I should be considering
