Angelenos, tell me about public transportation in your city

I'm going to be staying in the Eagle Rock area of Los Angeles for a couple weeks in late April/early May, housesitting for an acquaintance. I will have a car, but I'm wondering about other options for getting around.
I live in NYC, and while I'm from CA and at one time felt "I drive therefore I am," I've been a nondriver for a long time now, and am not excited about driving all over the place in a traffic-dense city I don't know very well. I'm wondering whether it would be possible to do some sort of hybrid, where I would drive to a metro station and then take the metro to various places I want to go. Are there places to park at or near the metro stations nearest to me? Is that a reasonable idea? Also: is there a particular bus line that covers a lot of ground that would give me an interesting eyeful of the city? I don't mean the tourist stuff, I mean the real city.
