Travel panic: misspelled name edition

How strict will this situation be?

So, i booked an international flight a few months ago, am a seasoned traveler, usually dial in all of the details. However, somehow my name must have gotten auto-filled on the booking as the shortened form of my name Dave instead of David.
I didn't notice until it was time to check in, and there was a hangup trying to enter my passport info.
I tried calling the carriers hotline, and they tell me that i can't make changes since it's now within 24 hours of travel. they warned me i wouldn't be allowed to fly.

Has this happened to anyone? and is it really so specific that they wont accept that the shortened form of my name is still my name and I am me.
So that's my question. do I have any hope of getting on the plane.
