Subsidiary to be folded into parent company; bring up with manager?
I work for a company that is an independently-run subsidiary of a much larger corporation. Generally we make our own decisions and are "left alone" by corporate.
Via a colleague who got the scoop from someone at corporate, it was recently made clear that we will be restructured and folded into the parent corporation's existing framework over the next 6-12 months. The details of which are not known--only that it's happening. Could be layoffs; we could be offered positions within the larger org, etc.
As far as I know, management is not aware that some number of us peons are privvy to this information.
My particular position is that I am a department of one. I would be somewhat surprised if I was laid off in this process, but I've also learned through experience that layoffs are always possible. I have many years of experience and would have no problem finding another job, but I'm in a great spot right now--I can do my work with almost no stress, remotely . . . it's a plumb gig that I don't want to willingly leave.
My relationship with my manager is great; they don't truly understand how I do what I do, nor do they have the bandwidth to spend what one would otherwise consider a normal amount of time with a direct report--this is fine with me. I don't need much (if any) oversight.
I have generally been blunt with them. I would like to ask them directly about the plan with corporate, but fear that I am "outing" my colleagues such that management now knows that we know, and they'll press me to find out how this information was uncovered. I also fear that any answer I get will just be typical leadership bullshit that can't be believed.
I also have no desire to work for the parent company; if anything it'll be a short 2-3 month bridge to something else, but I'm not staying for a variety of reasons too numerous to list here.
My thought process is if I can be honest with the manager and sell the idea that I might be useful to the parent company in a transitional period, I might get a heads up to the timeline or consideration when layoffs come around.
Is it worth bringing up the question, or do I start the process of searching for a new gig, knowing that the inevitable is coming, biding my time for the right opportunity |
