WiFi extender network doesn't work on phones

We use an extender to expand our wifi coverage in our house. The extender network- which is the only one that works on one side of the house- works on our computers, but when we try to use it on our phones we can't go online, make WiFi calls etc. What on earth could be going on?

We live in an area with very poor phone reception, so we rely on our T-Mobile booster- and therefore the WiFi network- to make calls, and also rely on WiFi on our phones when our data plans run out. As a result, this is a major problem for us. I'd appreciate your ideas as to what could be going on. The phone seems to connect to the extender network just fine and shows a strong signal, it just doesn't actually connect when we try to use it.
