Email from Facebook: accept new TOS or delete account?

I just got notified by Facebook that I need to either accept their new terms of service by May 25 or delete my account. The summary of the changes they are introducing is very vague. They are "updating Data Policy" and "making it easier for me to control my privacy".

But in view of the recent Facebook scandals, I just cannot shake the feeling that the changes might not be to my advantage. I do not trust myself to understand the small print.
Can someone explain it to me like I am 5 years old? Are they changing anything significant? Is it a good idea to just delete my account? FWiW, I use Facebook mostly for news and activism (this is how I learn about some local events).
