Pretty much what it says on the tin. Context below the fold ...
I've been working on making a career switch away from academia for a while and have been offered an opportunity to do a free short course in IT support work, followed by a paid short-term work placement. This is part of a government program where I live that's trying to help people to switch into tech-related jobs mid-career, where you shortlist a few kinds of jobs you want to be trained for – IT support was one of my lower preferences, hence I'm a little uncertain whether to take up the offer.
What is the work (and work environment) like on the ground? I feel like I have the necessary technical, problem-solving, and communication skills to do it, but I'm curious about the day-to-day. One thing I'm worried about is stress levels – in the teaching-focused work I'm doing at the moment we're essentially always in crunch mode without many windows to take a breath. I don't want to replicate that.
