Pain/discomfort in the ball of my foot. Super annoying...help please!

For the last two weeks I've been experiencing pain and a sort of uncomfortable irritating feeling in the ball of my left foot, closest to the area a few centimeters below my fifth toe. The best way I can describe the feeling is like just below the surface there are two layers being pulled in opposite directions and causing this sort of dull friction or like this straining sensation.

Pressing on the spot/area produces some tenderness but massaging hurts in a good way. I do not have pain while standing or walking, only while wearing shoes and sitting (at work, driving, etc.). The pain or discomfort is there while wearing most of my shoes and taking off the shoe feels like sweet relief.

I've done a bunch of googling, of course, and none of the common diagnoses for this area of the foot seem to match my symptoms - primarily in that I feel better when I'm standing/walking vs. while not using my foot.

The only change in the last few weeks was a 10 day vacation where I did quite a bit of walking. Does this sound like anything you can identify? I've been icing the area after work and it might help some shortly after I've done this but it goes back to the same feeling the next day.
