Medicaid estate recovery -- questions

The house we live in is subject to Medicaid recovery. We want to see whether our situation would permit us to keep the house for at least a while longer.

We did not protect our parent's Ohio estate (their house) before my mother (disabled by a series of strokes) signed up for Medicaid (long-term care at home provided by my sister through a paid-caregiver program for around 10 years). I also moved back here to help, as this care was very difficult for my sister. My father survived my mother, who died three years ago. Now, my sister and I care for him at home (he has dementia, but is happy most of the time). When he dies, Medicaid will claim the house to make up part of the $200,000 debt accrued through my mother's care. My father does not receive Medicaid, just as an aside. We both work at home, and neither of us makes more than $50,000 a year. I am 58 and my sister is 54.

This probably seems fair to a lot of people. However, we want to know whether any mitigating circumstances could allow us to remain in the house for at least a while longer than 90 days after our father's death. This has been our life for years, and we have nowhere else to go.

Elder care attorneys are recommended for estate planning and to help people protect their assests from Medicaid. Are these the same kinds of attorneys to call in a situation like this, where it is too late for planning?

Sorry about how dismal all this is. Whatever happens, we will land somewhere, but we still fear what is coming, and any productive advice about the type of people to consult or actions we could take would be helpful. We are east of Cleveland.
