I'll be in Paris for a week with my family of five, including two teen/tween boys. When I was younger and traveled with friends, I always enjoyed traveling with my art historian pal, because she was able to tell me stories about the artists and the time period that made the artwork more interesting. (e.g., Artemisia Gentileschi.) Can you recommend anyone who leads guided tours of museums, architecture, historical sights, neighborhoods, anything, that would contextualize the experience?
I'm not a visual-arts person, and I don't love just wandering around and not being able to put the visual into some kind of historical or narrative context. Our family has varying degrees of knowledge about fine art and architecture ranging from expert to know-nothing, but due to mobility constraints, the expert isn't going to be able to do everything with everyone. The tours would have to be in English -- I speak some French and so does my older son, but no one else does.
I had a rec from a friend for a tour guide who leads tours at the Louvre, but she's on maternity leave. I'd love to see the Rodin Museum, the Louvre, Musee d'Orsay, the Orangerie, Sacre Coeur, Sainte-Chapelle, and really anything else you think is interesting.
Any other recs for things to do with teen boys would be welcome. The catacombs, of course, but they have broad interests and are agreeable kids. I'm compiling a list of restaurants from other AskMe q's, too, but feel free to hit me with your favorite food spots. We're staying in the 19th. Thank you! |
