Finish the prerequisites before making the coins
The route belongs to Season 15, Season of Hell's Legacy. Complete its questline before consuming a Prime Evil Splinter: patch 3.2.3 prevents early use, but it does not repair characters whose progression was already affected.
Wirt's Lucky Coins are the fountain entry material, not the encounter's equipment reward. You make them in the Horadric Cube using one Splinter of Terror from Diablo, one Splinter of Destruction from Baal, and one Splinter of Hatred from Mephisto.
Reserve that complete set before spending spare materials on Prime Evil power changes. Only one Prime Evil power can be active at a time, so changing direction without checking your inventory can leave you short of an entry ingredient.
Target the boss tied to your missing material rather than repeating an encounter that supplies something you already have. The largest Waking Nightmares become replayable after their story appearances, and the seasonal map identifies the three major encounters.
Read item names before placing anything in the Cube. Socketable Soul Splinter gems belong to a separate jewelry and upgrade system; they do not replace the three Prime Evil ingredients.
Follow Cain's journals to the two portals
All 10 journals and the seasonal story are required for the unlock. Follow this sequence so you can tell a missing prerequisite from a failed fountain interaction.
Complete the seasonal questline.
Collect one Splinter of Terror, one Splinter of Destruction, and one Splinter of Hatred.
Place the three ingredients in the Horadric Cube and transmute them into Wirt's Lucky Coins.
Find and read all 10 of Deckard Cain's journals across Sanctuary.
Return to Deckard Cain at the Imperial Library and speak with him.
Enter the dark blue portal named Deckard's Memory.
Go to the fountain in central Tristram with the coins and make a wish.
Enter the red portal labeled "" and defeat the three Prime Evil echoes.
The dark blue portal confirms access to Tristram, not access to the boss fight itself. The red portal is the separate confirmation that the fountain stage succeeded.
If Deckard's Memory is missing, check story completion, journal reading, and Cain's conversation first. If the fountain consumes your coins without producing the red portal, stop there instead of feeding it another set; record the missing portal and the material loss.
The three echoes fight together, so prepare for overlapping pressure rather than three separate duels. Bring dependable boss damage, resource sustain that does not depend entirely on regular enemy kills, and a defensive skill you can use while repositioning.
Keep a movement option ready for an escape instead of spending every charge to reach a target. Melee setups need a controlled exit from damage windows, while ranged setups should leave room to move rather than retreating into the edge.
Separate completion rewards from repeat-run eligibility
The Standard of Heroes is not the Hellfire Torch and is not an equippable cosmetic. The Hellfire Torch is the associated Mythic Charm; keeping the quest item does not establish a crafting recipe, equipment bonus, or NPC exchange.
A repeat clear can produce only the Standard of Heroes after an earlier equipment payout. The September 22, 2026 hotfix increased the Prime Evil Council's loot cooldown without publishing its duration, so there is no confirmed hourly timer or daily reset to plan around.
Stop spending coins when another clear awards only the quest item. Equipment eligibility and a fountain that fails to open a portal are different problems, and repeating the entry sequence does not establish which one you have.
For progression already affected by early Splinter use, the documented workaround is another character in the same Normal or Hardcore and Normal or Solo Self-Found partition. Complete the seasonal questline there to unlock Prime Evil Powers for matching characters.
Before considering d4 gear for sale, check your current boss sustain and defensive setup, then verify that all three entry ingredients are reserved. Once the story and journals are complete, return to Cain at the Imperial Library and look for Deckard's Memory before committing another set of coins.
