Fit Matters More Than the Card Number
You will quickly notice that a 99 OVR card can feel awkward while a lower-rated option performs better in your hands. Swing timing, release points, speed, and defensive routes all matter. Matchups matter too. A lineup filled with right-handed bats may look powerful, yet it can become uncomfortable against a strong right-handed starter. Switch hitters such as Mickey Mantle, Carlos Beltrán, and Ben Zobrist give you more freedom without forcing a late reshuffle.
| Troy Tulowitzki | Shortstop | Reliable defence with steady power |
| Mickey Mantle | Centre field or utility role | Switch hitting and wide position coverage |
| Carlos Beltrán | Centre field | Speed, defence, and a balanced bat |
| Pete Crow-Armstrong | Defence-first centre field | Range and speed |
| Ben Zobrist | Second base or utility role | Contact, vision, and flexibility |
The Core Players to Consider
Tulowitzki is a sensible shortstop when you want a complete profile. His 115 Contact versus right-handed pitching, 105 Contact versus left-handed pitching, and 99 Arm Strength give him value on both sides of the ball. He is not the fastest option, but his 92 Fielding and 90 Reaction help him handle the position.
In centre field, Mantle gives you the easiest roster adjustment. He can hit from either side and is eligible at several positions, including all three outfield spots and the infield corners. Beltrán is the cleaner choice if you want to leave your centre fielder in place. Crow-Armstrong makes more sense when missed balls and extra-base hits are your main concern. At second base, Zobrist brings 125 Vision, 120 Clutch, and 93 Fielding, along with the ability to move around when a new card arrives.
Simple Roster Checks
Check contact and power against both pitching sides.
Give extra weight to reaction and arm strength in the middle infield.
Use speed to improve defensive coverage, not only stolen-base attempts.
Keep at least one flexible player available for later upgrades.
Try a card in actual games before making it a permanent starter.
Make the Lineup Feel Like Yours
A practical core would be Tulowitzki at shortstop, Mantle or Beltrán in centre field, and Zobrist at second base. Crow-Armstrong is worth the choice when defence is costing you more than a few points of power. Pay attention to the swings you trust, the balls your fielders reach, and the matchups that cause trouble. When you buy MLB The Show Stubs, use that flexibility to solve a real weakness rather than chasing the highest number on a card.
