Before starting the injection, ensure you are using the correct pen and the dose prescribed by your doctor. Do not rely solely on the pen's shape or the package's color, and never use someone else's pen, even if it contains the same medication.
Review the following points before each injection:
Check the medication name and active ingredient on the label.

Check the expiration date.
Inspect the pen to ensure it is not broken or damaged.
Verify that the solution appears clear and colorless or nearly colorless, as indicated in the product leaflet.
Do not use the pen if the solution is cloudy, discolored, or contains particles.
Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.
Use a new, sterile needle for each injection.
Prepare a secure container for disposing of needles and sharps.
Do not share your Ozempic pen or needles with anyone, even if the needle has been changed. Sharing the pen can transmit infection through the bloodstream. Do not attempt to withdraw the medication from the pen with a syringe or transfer its contents to another container.
It is recommended to store unused pens in the refrigerator at the temperature specified in the local package insert. The pen should not be frozen or placed directly near a source of cooling, heat, or sunlight. Storage instructions for the pen after use vary depending on the product, so refer to the leaflet included with your pen or ask your pharmacist.
Choosing the Right Injection Site
Ozempic is injected subcutaneously, not intramuscularly or intravenously. Common injection sites include:
Abdomen, avoiding injections too close to the navel.
Front of the thigh.
Upper arm.
You can choose one of these sites each week, but it is best to rotate the injection site. If you inject in the abdomen every time, change the injection site within the abdomen instead of always injecting in the same spot.
Rotating injection sites helps reduce skin irritation, bruising, and localized tenderness. Avoid injecting into swollen, tender, bruised, scarred, cut, rashed, or inflamed skin.
Ozempic can be used at the same time as insulin injections, but the two medications should not be injected at the same site or mixed in the same syringe. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for a clear plan if you are using insulin or other diabetes medications.
Steps for Using the Pen
You should receive a practical demonstration from your doctor or pharmacist upon first use. The following steps are general guidelines and do not replace reading the "Instructions for Use" included with the pen, as details may vary between pens and strengths.
Preparing the Pen
Remove the pen cap and double-check the medication name and dosage. Then, use a new needle each time and attach it to the pen as described in the instructions.
Do not use the needle if the package is open or damaged. Do not leave the needle attached to the pen after use, as this may lead to medication leakage, air ingress, or contamination.
Your user manual may instruct you to perform a medication flow test when using a new pen. Follow this step exactly as described in your pen's manual, and do not skip it if required.
Setting the Dose
Set the pen to the dose prescribed by your doctor only. Do not attempt to estimate the dose based on the volume of liquid in the pen, and do not use the number of clicks to determine a dose not prescribed by your doctor.
Your doctor may start you on a low dose and gradually increase it based on your response and tolerance to gastrointestinal symptoms. Slow weight loss does not necessarily mean you need a higher dose, and you should not increase or change your dose without consulting your doctor.
Introducing the Injection
Clean the injection site if instructed by your doctor or pharmacist, and allow the skin to dry. Insert the needle under the skin as instructed by your healthcare provider or according to the pen's manual.
After inserting the needle, press the dose button and hold it down until the dose counter returns to zero. The manufacturer's instructions recommend waiting with the needle still under the skin and slowly counting six seconds after the timer reaches zero to help ensure the full dose is administered.
Then, gently remove the needle from the skin. If you notice a small spot of blood, you can gently press on it with a clean gauze pad. Do not rub the area vigorously.
After Injection and Needle Disposal
After you have finished, carefully remove the needle and follow the provided safety instructions. Place the used needle in a sharps container and do not dispose of it in the regular trash can, toilet, or sink.
Never reuse the same needle, even if it appears clean. Reusing needles can cause pain and skin irritation, affect injection accuracy, and increase the risk of contamination.
Replace the pen cap after removing the needle and store it properly. Do not store the pen with the needle attached. Refer to the package insert for the pen's expiration date after first use. The US Ozempic instructions state that the pen should be discarded after 56 days, even if some medication remains. However, you should always follow the instructions specific to your product.
If there is a significant leak, the dose counter stops working properly, or the pen is dropped and broken, do not attempt to repair it yourself. Contact your pharmacist or clinic for proper guidance.
Choosing the day to inject and what to do if you miss a dose?
Ozempic is usually used once a week on the same day each week. It can be given at any time of day, with or without food, according to the package insert.
Choose a day that is easy to remember, such as a fixed day of the week, and set a reminder on your phone or calendar. Adhering to the schedule helps maintain your treatment plan and avoid missing doses.
