Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is aiming for a harsher, more grounded feel when it launches on October 23, 2026. The first two things players will notice are the campaign's focus on a collapsing Korean front and the multiplayer changes built around faster, less predictable fights. The beta runs from August 21 to August 25, giving early players a chance to test the new systems and, for those practising movement or weapon setups, explore MW4 Bot Lobbies before the full game arrives.

A Campaign That Starts in the Mud

The opening mission, "Losing Ground," drops players into South Korea during a North Korean invasion. There's no slow introduction. You play as Private Park, a young South Korean Marine trying to keep his squad alive while the front line gives way. Jae, Cho and American Marine Dunn add different voices to the unit, but the mood stays tense. Trenches, damaged positions and rushed decisions do most of the storytelling. After that mission, the game shifts to New York, where Captain Price continues his unofficial operations away from the chain of command.

What Weekend 1 Brings

Multiplayer is making several changes that could affect the way people hold buildings and lanes. The Riot Shield is no longer a primary weapon. It's now a destructible Field Upgrade, so sustained fire will eventually remove it from play. That should make corner camping less frustrating, especially in tight maps. Ground War is also back, with tanks, aircraft scorestreaks and plenty of room for long-range firefights.

Weekend 1 runs from August 21 through August 25.
Ground War includes drivable tanks and destructive aircraft scorestreaks.
The beta features 19 accessible weapons.
Apex attachments unlock after fully levelling a weapon.

Maps, Weapons and Apex Attachments

The beta footage shows a Mumbai map with moving trains, plus the dense urban setting of Kill Block. An AK-47 fitted with an underbarrel grenade launcher hints at the weapon flexibility on offer. Apex attachments add another layer to progression. These upgrades require a weapon to reach its maximum level, then provide a specialised effect. One example creates a stunning muzzle flash that can disrupt enemies at close range. The system could reward players who stick with a weapon instead of constantly chasing the newest option.

Operators and the Road Ahead

Digital pre-orders unlock Hunter Killer, an anonymous MIL-SIM operator from the fictional Korean unit Amyeongdae. The Vault Edition adds a detailed Simon "Ghost" Riley skin and Blix. Footage also teases a heavily armoured fighter carrying what looks like a minigun. Weekend 2 is expected to connect the beta with Warzone through the Zodiac Resurgence map, while future developer updates should cover PC requirements, download sizes, progression rewards and the full weapon list. Players planning their early grind may also choose to buy MW4 Bot Lobbies while testing loadouts and learning the new combat rhythm.
