For players building around strong D4 items, gems should be treated as part of a larger progression plan rather than the main source of power. A Royal gem may provide a nice stat increase, but that improvement can be minor compared with a powerful temper, a better legendary aspect, or a valuable masterworking upgrade.
Why Early Gem Spending Can Hurt
The biggest problem with expensive gems during leveling is that equipment changes quickly. A weapon that feels excellent at one level can become outdated after only a few upgrades. Spending heavily on its socketed gems means investing resources into an item that may soon be salvaged.
This is particularly wasteful when players rush toward high-tier weapon gems before obtaining reliable endgame equipment. A lower-cost gem in a temporary weapon is usually enough to keep progressing. Saving the expensive crafting process for a strong weapon makes the investment much more meaningful.
Check Your Resistances Before Upgrading Jewelry
Jewelry gems require a little more planning because resistance has a practical ceiling. Once your elemental resistances reach the relevant cap, additional resistance does not provide the same benefit.
That means automatically upgrading every jewelry gem is not always smart. Before visiting the Jeweler, check your character sheet and see whether your resistances are already where they need to be. If they are, spending more materials on resistance gems may offer almost no useful improvement.
The better choice could be improving another weakness in the build or saving the resources for gear upgrades that provide a larger increase in performance.
Temporary Armor Is Not Worth Expensive Gems
Armor creates another common resource trap. During World Tier progression, players can replace helmets, chest pieces, gloves, and boots very quickly. A gem investment made today may become irrelevant after finding a significantly better item tomorrow.
This does not mean armor gems should be ignored completely. It simply means their cost should match the expected lifespan of the item. Cheap or moderate upgrades are reasonable on temporary equipment, while expensive gems are better reserved for strong Ancestral pieces with useful affixes.
Follow Your World Tier
During World Tiers 1 and 2, Crude and Chipped gems are generally enough for normal progression. Your character changes so quickly that there is little reason to spend heavily at the Jeweler.
World Tier 3 is a better point to consider Standard or Flawless gems. Weapon gems can provide a useful damage increase, while armor gems can remain a lower priority if your defenses are already comfortable.
In World Tier 4, Royal gems become more worthwhile, especially after you have acquired strong Ancestral gear. Even then, the goal should be to upgrade equipment that is likely to remain part of your final build rather than simply filling every socket with the most expensive option.
Better Places to Spend Your Gold
Tempering is often a much more important investment than rushing gem tiers. A useful temper can add a build-defining effect to an otherwise strong item, changing how a skill or damage setup performs.
Masterworking can also produce a larger overall improvement because it strengthens existing affixes on high-quality equipment. Once you have an item worth keeping, these upgrades can offer considerably more value than a small flat stat increase from a gem.
Legendary aspects should also be part of the calculation. A strong build with appropriate aspects and solid equipment will usually benefit more from fixing a weak aspect than from replacing several perfectly serviceable gems.
Save Expensive Gems for the Right Moment
The best gem strategy is not to avoid expensive upgrades completely. It is to delay them until the investment makes sense. When your core equipment is stable and your build has the right tempers, aspects, and masterworking progress, higher-tier gems become a much more reasonable final upgrade.
If you are still filling important gear gaps, your gold may have greater value elsewhere.
