Sunder has quietly become one of the more interesting PoE1 options before 3.29. A Hollow Palm Slayer test showed about 8.7 million mapping DPS, 90,000 effective health, 68% attack block, 65% spell block, 14,000 evasion, and 15,000 armour without flasks. Those numbers make more sense when you look at the gearing plan and the kind of POE currency needed to reach it, rather than treating the damage figure as the whole story.
Sunder Feels Better Than Its Tooltip Suggests
Hollow Palm turns Dexterity into unarmed physical damage through One With Nothing. That frees the build from weapon upgrades and gives every attribute item a second job. Sunder then sends a wave across the ground, hitting enemies at a safer distance than most slam skills. Packs make it even better, since struck enemies can produce extra shockwaves.
You'll notice one catch pretty quickly. Sunder isn't a button you can mash without thinking. Only one travelling wave from the player can remain active, so casting again too soon cuts off the previous one. More attack speed helps the character feel less clumsy, but it doesn't always translate into equal real-world DPS. Multistrike may look good in Path of Building, yet many players find its rhythm awkward with Sunder.
What Keeps the Slayer Alive
The defence works through layers. Block and spell block stop many hits, evasion removes more, and armour reduces the physical damage that gets through. Slayer leech keeps working at full life, while the ascendancy also offers damage reduction during leeching. It's a practical setup for maps, where small hits arrive constantly.
That doesn't make the build immune to bad moments. The corrected test figures put the physical maximum hit near 8,800, not 9,600, and the character has no guard skill included in that estimate. Stuns are a real concern too. A nasty altar modifier, a crowded encounter, and one lost movement window can still end the run.
Build the Character in the Right Order
Don't force the finished Hollow Palm version during the campaign. Start with a normal physical weapon and convert once the important pieces are ready. This route keeps the character playable instead of leaving you with a half-built attribute stack.
  1. Level with Sunder, a solid two-handed weapon, life, and capped resistances.
  2. Collect Dexterity gear before equipping One With Nothing.
  3. Settle your resistances, life, mana, and block after the weapon disappears.
  4. Add leech, stun protection, and ailment solutions before chasing luxury damage.
  5. Buy premium jewels such as Light of Meaning only after the core setup clears comfortably.
Mapping Is the Natural Home
Dense maps suit this build. The wave reaches packs, kill effects stay active, and Slayer recovery has plenty of targets to feed on. Reflected physical damage is manageable through the ascendancy, while awkward map mods can often be handled with a flask or passive adjustment. Bosses are less forgiving. Temporary buffs fade, targets spread out, and every slam animation matters. Around 7.8 million damage is a more sensible boss expectation than the best flask-boosted number.
Hollow Palm Sunder Slayer looks like a strong day-two or day-three transition rather than a true day-one starter. Its performance depends on sensible attack timing, stun protection, and a budget that may shift with jewel prices. Players planning their upgrades can check Path of exile currency for sale options when comparing costs, but the build should already feel reliable before expensive pieces are added.
