France has two different IDP questions that are often mixed together. The first question is for people with a French driving licence who want to drive abroad. The second question is for foreigners who are already in France and want to drive in France, rent a car, or prepare for travel to another country.

The answer is different in each case.

1. If Your Licence Was Issued in France

If you hold a French driving licence and need an International Driving Permit for another country, the official route is through the French online system.

The French international permit is a translation of your French licence. It is used outside France, in countries where a French licence alone may not be enough.

The request is made online through France Titres / ANTS.

This official French procedure is mainly for holders of a French driving licence. It is not a general way for every foreign visitor in France to receive a French IDP.

2. If You Are a Foreigner in France

If you are already in France with a foreign driving licence, the most important point is the country that issued your licence.

A person with a licence from another EU or EEA country can generally drive in France while the licence is valid. This is part of the European recognition system.

A person with a licence from outside Europe may be able to drive in France during a short stay, but the rules are more limited. For longer residence, France may require an exchange of the foreign licence, depending on the country of issue and the driver’s status.

3. Can a Foreigner Get a French IDP Online?

Usually, no.

A French International Driving Permit is normally based on a French driving licence. If your licence was issued in the United States, Canada, India, the United Kingdom, Brazil, Turkey, the UAE, Ukraine, or another country, the official IDP should usually come from the country that issued your original licence.

For example, a U.S. licence holder should normally use the authorised U.S. IDP route. A Canadian licence holder should check the Canadian issuer. An Indian licence holder should check the Indian RTO/Parivahan system.

France generally does not issue a French IDP only because a foreign driver is currently staying in France.

4. If You Are Already in France and Need a Document Quickly

Some travellers discover the need for an IDP only after arriving in France. This can happen at a rental office, before a road trip, or when planning travel from France to another country.

If you cannot easily obtain an official IDP from the licence-issuing country, a multilingual driving licence translation or supporting international driving document may help in practical travel situations.

You can submit an online application for an IDP in France with your licence details, photo, signature, and delivery information.

This document should be used together with your original valid driving licence. It should not be treated as a French driving licence or as a replacement for an official government-issued permit when such a permit is specifically required.

5. Driving in France vs Driving From France

A driver in France may need documents for two different reasons.

One reason is driving inside France. In this case, the rules depend on whether the licence is European, non-European, temporary, student-related, or residence-based.

The other reason is leaving France and driving elsewhere. A foreigner staying in France may want to rent a car in Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Germany, Portugal, Greece, or another country. In that case, the rules of the destination country also matter.

A document accepted in France may not automatically be accepted in another country.

6. Car Rental in France

French car rental companies may ask for more than the basic legal minimum. A rental branch may require the original driving licence, passport, credit card, IDP, translation, or proof that the licence has been held for a certain period.

This is especially common at airport branches, railway stations, Paris rental offices, Côte d’Azur locations, ski resorts, and areas with many international tourists.

Before booking, check the exact rental office conditions. A prepaid reservation does not guarantee that the car will be released if the documents are incomplete.

7. Important Points

  • An IDP does not replace the original driving licence.
  • A French IDP is normally for French licence holders driving abroad.
  • Foreign drivers usually need an IDP from the country that issued their licence.
  • A non-European licence may be valid only temporarily in France.
  • Residents may need to exchange their foreign licence.
  • Rental companies may apply stricter document rules.
  • The IDP or translation must match the vehicle category on the original licence.

Summary

To get an International Driving Permit online in France, first check where your licence was issued.

If you hold a French licence, use the official France Titres / ANTS online procedure. If you are a foreigner already in France, the official IDP usually has to come from the country that issued your original licence.

For travel situations, rental checks, or licence translation support, an online international driving document may be useful, but it should always be used together with the original valid driving licence.
