Getting an International Driving Permit online in Spain depends on one important detail: where your driving licence was issued. Spain has one procedure for people who hold a Spanish driving licence, and a different practical situation for foreigners who are already in Spain with a licence from another country.

The phrase “international driving licence” is often used casually, but the official document is usually called an International Driving Permit, or IDP. It is not a separate driving licence. It is a supporting document that accompanies your valid national licence when you drive abroad.
If You Have a Spanish Driving Licence
If your driving licence was issued in Spain, the official route is through the Dirección General de Tráfico, known as the DGT.
The DGT explains that the Spanish International Driving Permit is a complementary document. It must be used together with your valid Spanish driving licence and passport. It is intended for driving outside Spain, especially in countries where a Spanish licence alone may not be enough.
The official DGT international permit is valid for one year. It is a temporary travel document, not a long-term driving licence for moving abroad permanently.
You can check the official procedure on the DGT page for the Spanish international driving permit.
Can You Apply Online Through the DGT?
Yes, but “online” does not always mean that the whole process is digital from start to finish.
The DGT allows the request to be started online through its electronic office. However, the physical permit may still need to be collected from a traffic office. The applicant normally needs a valid Spanish driving licence, identification, payment of the official fee, and the required form or electronic request.
This option is mainly for people who already hold a Spanish driving licence. It is not a general online solution for every foreign driver staying in Spain.
If You Are a Foreigner Already in Spain
Foreigners in Spain often face a different problem. They may have a U.S., UK, Canadian, Indian, UAE, Turkish, Brazilian, Ukrainian, or other non-Spanish driving licence and suddenly discover that a rental company, insurer, or local authority wants an IDP or translation.
In most cases, Spain will not issue a Spanish International Driving Permit based only on a foreign licence. An official IDP is normally issued by the country that issued the original driving licence.
For example, a driver with a U.S. licence should normally obtain an IDP through the authorised U.S. route. A driver with a Canadian licence should check the Canadian issuing system. A driver with an Indian licence should check the Indian RTO/Parivahan procedure.
If you are already in Spain and need a supporting international driving document or licence translation, you can use the application for an IDP in Spain to submit your licence details, photo, signature, and delivery information online.
Driving in Spain With an EU or EEA Licence
Drivers with licences issued in the European Union or European Economic Area are in the simplest position. The DGT states that EU and EEA driving licences are valid in Spain as long as they are current.
This means that a person with a valid licence from France, Germany, Italy, Poland, the Netherlands, Portugal, Ireland, Austria, or another EU/EEA country normally does not need an IDP just to drive in Spain.
However, residence rules may still matter. If the licence expires while the person is living in Spain, renewal or exchange may need to be handled under Spanish procedures. You can review the official DGT information on driving in Spain with a foreign licence.
Driving in Spain With a Non-EU Licence
Drivers from outside the EU and EEA should check Spain’s rules before driving or renting a car. Spain’s official tourism guidance recommends obtaining an International Driving Permit before travelling to Spain if the licence comes from another country outside the EU/EEA framework.
In practice, this is especially relevant for visitors from the United States, Canada, Australia, India, South Africa, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Turkey, and other non-EU countries.
A non-EU driver should carry the original national driving licence. The IDP or translation should be used together with it, not instead of it. The official Spanish tourism portal provides additional travel information on driving regulations in Spain.
Car Rental in Spain
Car rental companies in Spain may have stricter document rules than travellers expect. A licence may be legally acceptable in one situation, but a rental company can still ask for an IDP, a translation, a passport, a credit card, or a licence held for a minimum period. This is especially common at airport locations, islands, tourist areas, and for non-EU licence holders.
Before booking a vehicle, check the rental terms for the exact branch. Do not rely only on general advice from forums or past travel experience. Requirements can differ between companies and even between offices of the same company.
If You Are Living in Spain
A person living in Spain should not treat an IDP as a permanent solution. The IDP is mainly for temporary international driving. It does not replace licence exchange, renewal, or Spanish residence-based driving rules.
If you become resident in Spain, you may need to exchange your foreign licence, renew it under Spanish rules, or obtain a Spanish licence depending on the country that issued your original document.
The DGT maintains official information on foreign driving permits and exchange agreements. Residents should check the relevant DGT procedure instead of relying on an IDP for long-term driving.
What You Need Before Applying Online
Before submitting any online application for an international driving document, prepare a clear copy of your valid driving licence. If the licence has two sides, both sides may be needed. You should also prepare a recent personal photo, your signature, contact details, and a delivery address if you need a printed document.
The details must match your original licence. The document cannot add motorcycle, truck, bus, or trailer categories that are not already shown on your national licence.
Common Mistakes
Many problems happen because drivers misunderstand the purpose of an IDP. It is not a replacement for a national licence. It cannot make an expired licence valid. It cannot override Spanish traffic law. It cannot replace the rules for residents who need to exchange or renew a licence in Spain.
Another common mistake is waiting until the rental desk to check document rules. If a rental company requires an IDP and you do not have one, the booking may be refused even if the car was paid for in advance.
