The phrase “international driving licence” is often used casually, but the official document is usually called an International Driving Permit, or IDP. It is not a separate driving licence. It is a supporting document that accompanies your valid national licence when you drive abroad.
If You Have a Spanish Driving Licence
If your driving licence was issued in Spain, the official route is through the Dirección General de Tráfico, known as the DGT.
The DGT explains that the Spanish International Driving Permit is a complementary document. It must be used together with your valid Spanish driving licence and passport. It is intended for driving outside Spain, especially in countries where a Spanish licence alone may not be enough.
The official DGT international permit is valid for one year. It is a temporary travel document, not a long-term driving licence for moving abroad permanently.

Can You Apply Online Through the DGT?
Yes, but “online” does not always mean that the whole process is digital from start to finish.
The DGT allows the request to be started online through its electronic office. However, the physical permit may still need to be collected from a traffic office. The applicant normally needs a valid Spanish driving licence, identification, payment of the official fee, and the required form or electronic request.
This option is mainly for people who already hold a Spanish driving licence. It is not a general online solution for every foreign driver staying in Spain.

What You Need Before Applying Online

The details must match your original licence. The document cannot add motorcycle, truck, bus, or trailer categories that are not already shown on your national licence.
Common Mistakes
Many problems happen because drivers misunderstand the purpose of an IDP. It is not a replacement for a national licence. It cannot make an expired licence valid. It cannot override Spanish traffic law. It cannot replace the rules for residents who need to exchange or renew a licence in Spain.
Another common mistake is waiting until the rental desk to check document rules. If a rental company requires an IDP and you do not have one, the booking may be refused even if the car was paid for in advance.
