We're trying to set up a video conference with colleagues from a partner university overseas, but we've hit a wall with the language barrier. Not everyone on their side understands English well enough to follow along during discussions, and honestly some of our faculty members aren't confident with their language skills either. We looked into hiring a simultaneous interpreter but the costs are insane for what we need, plus we're not even sure that's the best solution for this kind of academic collaboration. Are there any online platforms out there that can help with real-time translation during video calls?

International academic partnerships sound great on paper until you actually have to coordinate anything across different languages. Everyone gets excited about the collaboration opportunities, then reality hits when you're trying to discuss research methodologies and half the room is lost after the first five minutes. Regular video call software just leaves people nodding along pretending they caught everything. You could try platforms like Zoom with live transcription features, though those work better for generating captions than actual translation. Microsoft Teams has some translation built in but it's hit or miss depending on the languages you're working with.

The whole interpreter route gets messy because you're adding another person into the conversation and everything slows down while they relay information back and forth. Then you lose that natural flow of discussion where people can jump in with questions or ideas. You can handle multilingual video conferences through the Hitoo platform https://hitoo.io/ . It's a service with built-in AI that instantly translates what participants are saying from different languages. Everyone hears the conversation in their own language without the awkward pauses or the need to route everything through a third party.
