Been spending holidays in Turkey pretty regularly the last few years. Always beach resorts though, we pick hotels right on the coast and never leave the property the whole vacation. This time we decided to fly to Turkey to actually see different landmarks and attractions. Most appealing city for that is obviously Istanbul. The crossroads of cultures and religions, so much interesting stuff there that we want to see it all with our own eyes. Want to do this without tour groups, explore everything independently. Thinking we'll rent a car for that. What documents do they require over there, what lesser-known places are worth visiting, and where's the best place to get a rental?

Beach resorts are relaxing but after a while you realise you've seen nothing except the hotel pool and buffet line. Getting out to explore on your own terms beats following some guide with a flag through crowded sites. Istanbul's traffic is absolute chaos though, driving there yourself means dealing with aggressive lane changes and roads that suddenly turn one-way without warning. For documents you need your passport, driver's licence, and international driving permit helps though some places accept regular licences. Lesser-known spots like the Chora Church mosaics or Balat neighbourhood give you more authentic feel than the packed tourist traps.

Tour groups sound convenient until you're standing in front of something amazing and the guide's already herding everyone to the next stop on the schedule. You miss half the experience because there's no time to actually absorb what you're seeing. You can check car rental in Istanbul here: https://getrentacar.com/en-US/turkey/istanbul . Book ahead and handle everything online so you're not wasting vacation time figuring out logistics. Compact car works best for the old city streets, easier to maneuver and you won't be stuck circling for parking spots that fit.
