Not every business is busy investing in an online presence. They might be small mom-and-pop outlets, local service businesses, or just not as digitally focused as some of the younger crowd.

Luckily, there are still methods of acquiring clients for your web design or web development business. Whether you're aiming at a local bakery hidden in the corner or a niche, custom-made service, you need to put in the effort. If you're looking to differentiate yourself, here are 6 methods I've utilized (and one I'm still utilizing, which is stated at the end) to uncover businesses that require websites.

Ask people in your area
Yes, the old way still does it: word of mouth. Simply ask your family, friends, or neighbors if they are aware of any local businesses that do not have an online presence. Or, walk around local business areas and inquire if they are in need of a new site. I would suggest employing a friendlier tone as local businesses would most likely welcome a direct, friendly approach, unlike bigger companies.

Go to business events and visit the chamber of commerce
Business events and chambers of commerce can be gold mines for acquiring long-term clients, particularly if you are serious about developing solid networks. Visit local business events and keep in touch with professionals in your locality. Though this method requires more time and effort, the information and contacts you acquire are always current and worthwhile.

Utilize social media
Most local businesses use Facebook or Instagram as a website, rather than having their own dedicated site. Typically, they don't have the time or haven't thought about creating one. I've found a bit of success in using Facebook to hunt for leads by looking for local community groups (e.g., "Handypersons in London") and seeing if their Facebook Page has a "website" section completed. If not, it's a great chance to contact them and provide your services.

Utilize old-school directories
You've likely heard of Yellow Pages (now online), local newspapers, and city directories. Most businesses continue to list themselves in these directories, so it's easy to get contact details, business hours, and so on. This provides you with a direct means of getting in touch and providing web design services. Explore Google Maps Consider this scenario: if you type a keyword like 'plumbers near me' into Google Maps, you’ll see a list of local plumbers. For each business, check for a website by looking for the globe icon. If it’s missing, that’s a potential client. The downside is the repetitive clicking, scrolling, and checking, which can be time-consuming. However, there is a more efficient and automated solution, which I’ll discuss next.

Webleadr
Webleadr home page and dashboard page. A tool to find web design leads.
Webleadr is a web design lead platform that helps you fetch clients effortlessly from anywhere in the world in grow your web design or development business. For example, if you want to get dentists in a specific city with/without websites, Webleadr allows you to scan them in one go and you just call them right away with just one click of a button. It also shows you if each company has a dedicated website or is relying on third-party platforms like Facebook, Instagram or even any kind of third-party services for example a booking site. They can be considered as web design/development leads as well.

Webleadr saves you the hassle of manually scrolling through endless lists of businesses in search of leads. Instead, it automates the process and provides you with a well-organized dashboard that lists businesses without websites or those using non-dedicated platforms. Plus, it comes with many additional features to make your client search more efficient.
