CEDIA Reports Tariffs Could Cause Drastic Spike In Laptop Prices

CEDIA has released its latest report highlighting an expected shift in consumer electronics pricing. According to the data, the Trump administration’s tariff policies could substantially increase costs for a range of smart home devices and other electronics. CEDIA’s report suggests that U.S. families can expect an average price increase of 10% for connected devices, 40-58% for video game consoles, and 46-68% for laptops and tablets.
As a result of these increases,CEDIAprojects an 18% drop in purchasing plans for connected devices, as well as a decline of over 50% in spending on specific technology categories. The imposition of new tariffs, including a 10% tariff introduced on imports from China and progressively elevated rates on steel and aluminum, has ignited consumer fears of rising prices. The Consumer Technology Association (CTA) warns of a forthcoming national decline in purchasing power, with 78% of consumers anticipating higher prices and 75% expecting product shortages.

The increase in tariffs is expected to stimulate price hikes across various smart home categories. Key projections include:
- Connected Devices:Average price increase of 10%, leading to an expected 18.1% reduction in purchases.
- Smart TVs:Projected price rise of up to 9%.
- Laptops and Tablets:Price increases estimated between 46% to 68%.
- Smartphones:Anticipated price hikes from 26% to 37%.
- Video Game Consoles:Estimated price shifts of 40% to 58%.
- Smart Appliances:Increases nearing 20% due to material costs.
With many companies indicating 38% will pass full cost increases to customers and just 4% planning to absorb these costs, the landscape of technology retail is changing. Companies that excel in this environment will do so by framing their products’ value in innovative ways, highlighting potential long-term savings and environmental benefits.
