What Three National Parks and Sites Are Hidden in This Small Town in New Mexico?

Nowadays, Los Alamos welcomes tourists looking to see some of the greatest (and shockingly underrated) national parks and landmarks in the state. Three national parks and attractions may be reached from downtown Los Alamos within a 30-minute drive, and in some instances, a 5-minute walk: Bandelier National Monument, Valles Caldera National Preserve, and the Manhattan Project National Historical Park. Additionally, all three parks will be open for free on Saturday, April 22 in honor of National Park Week, which this year takes place from April 22 to April 30.
"Our three national parks are within a five-minute walk to a 30-minute drive from downtown Los Alamos," said Kelly Stewart, a spokeswoman for the Los Alamos County Economic Development Division, in a news release shared with driving directions on March 21. "Each park has outdoor leisure activities, such as fishing in a dormant super volcano, visiting Ancient Puebloan caves, and viewing the downtown historic center. Each park symbolizes a distinct age, culture, and location in time. There are award-winning restaurants, breweries, and sights to discover when you go back to the city.
The Manhattan Project National Historical Park, a park that honors the effort done by scientists and Nobel Prize winners to conceptualize and construct the atomic bomb, is the location that is most near downtown Los Alamos. The award-winning Bradbury Science Museum, which houses models of the Little Boy and Fat Man atomic bombs, is another option for tourists. Before "Oppenheimer," a Christopher Nolan picture starring Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr., and Matt Damon, among others, debuts in July 2023, movie fans will want to go to the location.
One of the world's seven mega volcanoes, the 89,000-acre Valles Caldera National Preserve is in the west and is a great place to find quiet and nature. There are lots of hiking, biking, and horseback riding paths as well as camping and fishing opportunities in the Valles Caldera. While practically everyone who remains in the preserve after midnight is rewarded to dark, starry sky, you could be fortunate enough to see an elk or a golden eagle.
The Bandelier National Monument, an old Puebloan historical site with cliff dwellings and petroglyphs, is located immediately south of Los Alamos. The ability to literally enter the houses of ancient Puebloans while viewing them from a cliff's edge is perhaps the most notable feature for tourists. The path system of Bandelier National Monument is rather extensive.
The Manhattan Project National Historical Park is always free to visit, and all three parks will have free admission on April 22 to begin off National Park Week. Santa Fe and Albuquerque are both around a 30-minute and an hour-and-a-half journey from Los Alamos, respectively.
