Game designer Joe Shely explains during a recent roundtable interview that reimaging sets in a way that is compatible with Diablo 4 properly wouldn't be possible for launch early next year, though the team is looking at adding them to it's live services.
"As we've been working on the game, we felt like we could evolve sets in a new manner that is different from what we've seen within Diablo 3. But, we needed some more time to integrate sets in the game in a way that would work seamlessly with the rest of Diablo 4, so you aren't going to see them right away within the game." Shely explains. "We think sets are cool, and we want to do them right - and that's what we're looking towards for live play."
"There's a staff legend in the demo which turns the spell's fireball spell into three fireballs," former game director Luis Barriga told Polygon(opens in new tab) back in 2019. "The different is that, you know, a set right now in live Diablo 3 gives you bonuses that are a lot more than the thousands. I'm sure we're planning the game in the moment to be tighter to keep us from getting us into that super escalating performance curve."
