NBA Today probably didn't catch much Los Angeles Lakers or Minnesota Timberwolves basketball this season. Cassidy Hubbarth, Los Angeles Sparks power forward Chiney Ogwumike, Matt Barnes and Brian Windhorst spoke about their perceptions of NBA 2K doing Russell Westbrook dirty with their most recent player ranking of the beleaguered L.A. point guard. The latest version of the video game, NBA 2K23, is available today.
Westbrook was awarded a "mere" 78 overall rating, which is one notch lower than the 79 he received from his new teammate (and Westbrook's potential replacement as the team's new player) Patrick Beverley. Cassidy Hubbarth called the move "petty," which leads one to question which Cassidy Hubbarth see the damage an active Russell Westbrook did to the Lakers on the floor last season? Barnes, a fifteen-year professional who played two seasons with the Kobe Bryant/Pau Gasol Lakers, noted that he was the host of a 2K launch party in the past and that Westbrook's score was the most discussed 2K23 news item of the night. "I thinkthat even though Russ had an off-season last year, I think his rating is way too low," Barnes opined. I believe Pat Bev is right there... a 79 is a solid ranking, but Russ's ranking is way too low."
If you believe that 79 is solid, shouldn't 78 also be solid? Beverley is a solid defensive player and is a great three-point shooter. Westbrook may be a better player (at minimum, during the beginning of a game) and rebounder, numbers which a video game would reward, but he is definitively not a "better" competitor than Beverley at this point in their careers. "Russ however, no matter how much you question his skills and try to point out his weaknesses, I believe that he's still doing a great job," Ogwumike contended on the show. "
