Both types of diabetes have similar warning signs.
Hunger and fatigue. Your body converts the food you eat into glucose, which your cells use for energy. But your cells need insulin to absorb glucose. If your body doesn't make enough insulin, or doesn't make it at all, or if your cells oppose the insulin your body makes, glucose can't move into them and you don't have energy. This can make you feel hungrier and more tired than usual.
You urinate more often and drink more. The average person usually has to urinate four to seven times a day, but people with diabetes may urinate more frequently. Why? Your body normally reabsorbs glucose as it passes through the kidneys. But when diabetes raises blood sugar, the kidneys can't bring it back up. This causes the body to produce more urine, which requires fluid.
Result: You have to walk more often. You may also urinate more. Because you urinate a lot, you may feel very thirsty. When you drink too much, you also urinate more.
Dry mouth and itchy skin. Since your body uses liquid to urinate, there is less moisture left for other things. You can become dehydrated and have a dry mouth. Dry skin can be itchy.
