The footage chronicles the ground-based interceptor fired from California’s Vandenberg Air Force Base as it meets a ballistic missile target launched from the Ronald Reagan Test Site on Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands. An infrared view captures the moment its “exo-atmospheric kill vehicle intercepted and destroyed the target in a direct collision” over the Pacific Ocean, per the U.S. Missile Defense Agency. The successful $244 million endeavor on Tuesday marked the first live-fire test of U.S. defenses against an intercontinental ballistic missile, according to the Pentagon.
