I no longer wish to be a Virgin [Media customer]

Sorry, probably a fairly niche question. I've had a cable service with Virgin Media (UK) for a few years. I want to cancel the service because I've switched to another provider. They only offer cancellation via phone but I can never actually reach a human - is there another way to cancel a contract in the UK that would carry some legal weight?

Virgin Media seem to be making it as difficult as possible to cancel. Even though you can do everything else online - sign up for new services, upgrade your package etc - the only publicised way to cancel is by phone.

No matter what time of day I call the number given, I go through the phone tree to cancellations and get half an hour of awful middle-of-the-road pop music before giving up because I've got stuff to do. I'm going to end up paying two bills if I'm not careful - one for Virgin Media and one for my new ISP. I'm long since out of my minimum term with Virgin and can give notice at any time.

Are there other ways that I can cancel the contract? For example, sending a letter to their head office giving notice feels like it should carry some weight. It feels almost criminal that I'm having to continue to give them money because they don't provide a functioning way to end the relationship.
