How to stop the internet from stalking me

The digital age is starting to freak me out. Can someone please explain to me how Facebook - in web browser (chrome) - on my laptop (Windows 10) connected to the internet via cell phone hotspot (T-mobile/Android) knows that I recently changed locations, even with location settings disabled on all devices?
I recently flew from New England to South Florida. Neither laptop nor phone were connected to on-board wifi at any time. I opened Facebook this morning (which I need for work, #deletefacebook comments are not helpful) in Florida and Facebook is promoting events happening in/around Miami. Freaking me right out.
Creepy things of note:
Neither phone nor laptop have location settings enabled and no apps have access to location
Neither Facebook app or Facebook messenger is installed on either device
Location settings blocked on chrome, facebook.com not in Allow list
I used to be pretty tech savvy but things have gotten beyond me now. Is Facebook able to grab my phone's IP address and track me that way? Why is this happening and how can I stop it? I'm more than willing to swap to a more private browser if recommended, but laptop and phone need to continue to exist as is.
Note: I'm not doing anything illegal or shady, I just feel my devices need not be sentient to their location unless I deem it so. Yes I might have control issues but that's for another AskMe. |
