Effect of a mechanic's lien - for shoddy work?

A contractor came to replace a single broken window pane at my house. In the process of "fixing" this window pane, he managed to break the entire window, smash the window frame, and break some of the plaster surrounding the window. He then covered the whole thing with a tarp (duct-taped to the outside of the house) and left, saying he'd come back and fix it all later.

Rather than have him do any more damage, I ended up hiring new contractors to fix all of this (at great expense). But he billed me for 12 hours of work (the original estimate was for 30 minutes), and said he would "only have required a day or two more on-site to fix it all". I refused to pay (either for the original work or for him to fix the problem he himself caused), and he is now threatening me with a mechanic's lien.

If it matters, I own my home outright in the US, and have no intent to move or sell in the next 15 years or so.

What should I do here?
