Focus Your Energies on Those To Whom You Don't Have to Prove Yourself?

A likely former friend said that years ago, at the termination of another friendship, they were heavily influenced by a blog entry suggesting that they "focus their energies on the people whom they do not have to prove themselves to," citing the philosophy as why they need not address or care about some concerns I expressed about our friendship. Continues inside.

I am interested in two things:

(A) particularly high-profile or popular articles about this philosophy, ideally pre-2015ish, as I'd like to read the source article, what this philosophy is called, etc.; and

B) the philosophical question of how this philosophy addresses relationships with others.

Is this person overlooking a portion of the philosophy, or does it truly just give people carte blanche to treat others as they best see fit because "they don't have to prove themselves"? If so, that seems a philosophy custom-made for self-centeredness and/or hedonism.
