ad hoc work groups and accountability partners

What are some ways to create accountability and discussion teams that are easy to adopt.

I'm doing some educational programs online that are pretty challenging. A typical course does this: join the course, then join the Facebook group for the course.

I don't see FB as being particular useful for discussion. It's just a maelstrom of likes and distractions, however it's extremely easy to adopt creating a network effect.

So, my question is once you contact people via FB, perhaps to create accountability groups or find partners and you want to have discussions, share tips, trade files, whatever. where or how do people go about that? What tools, or sites do they typically use to do this?

I have access to the typical means: emails, google docs and the like. I'm looking for tips and means to have online discussions with a select group of people that gets out of the FB black hole that is easy to adopt with a low threshold to get something useful happening.

Ease of adoption is pretty key. The more complex this is, the less likely people would be to use it.
