Legal term for interpreting a law in such a way as to make it make sense

Some people are saying you can't impeach and disqualify an ex-president. But others say that if that was the case, the law enabling it wouldn't make sense, because anybody could avoid disqualification by simply resigning 30 seconds before they were disqualified. So therefore we interpret the law in a way that makes it sensical because we assume legislators are smart. Without getting into the merits necessarily, is there a term for this doctrine?
