Please help me solve this mystery! My brother has a vague memory of watching a movie on tv in the early 1980s when he was approximately five years old. The characters were dressed as fruit akin to the Fruit of the Loom characters. And he specifically recalls a scene featuring the apple character being roasted on a spit over an open fire.
My brother said that the film could have been filmed anywhere between the 1950s and the early 1980s, but he believes it was from the 1970s. Additional details:
- it was a movie, not animated or claymation
- it was a dark comedy
- it was not a kids show
- the apple was red
- the apple was in distress
- the actor that played the apple was male
- the movie was most likely in color
- all the actors were in costume
- the scene with the apple on the spit was most likely an exterior night shot, possibly shot on on a beach
- it was not 'Sleeper' (which also features outsized fruit)
- kids ages of 13 and 18 who were also present during the viewing found the content to be "very funny"
- this occurred on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon in the Chicago area (I think 'Family Classics' might still have been a thing in the early 1980s)
- this movie was most likely viewed on a tv station, not via cable or on VHS
