ISO examples of newcomers suddenly morphing into "experts"

I'm sure this happens all the time, but I can't come up with a single incident off the top of my head: you hear some talk show host breathlessly interviewing someone you've never heard of about a topic in your field that's been old news for some time.

Before you know it, they seem to be everywhere—now appearing as an "expert" in the field. While introducing the general population to the subject is a good thing, it's annoying as all get out that speaker/author fails to acknowledge previous work. Please help me out with examples.
