Lately I've been really into John Cullum's performance on the song "I Rise Again" from the musical On the Twentieth Century. What are some other songs that feature similarly dramatic vocal performances?
Another example of what I'm looking for would be Cullum's performance of "Come Back to Me" from On a Clear Day You Can See Forever. I'd like to hear more such performances, with a similar level of over-the-top theatricality in the vocals - booming baritone, a wide vocal range, rolled R's out the wazoo, and so on.
Other notes:
- Specific song recs preferred, but if an entire libretto or album can be described as "super dramatic," I'll give it a shot, especially if it's on Spotify.
- Assume very little knowledge of Broadway or other musicals besides ones that have made it into the U.S. pop culture zeitgeist or have been made into movies (e.g. Hamilton, Rent, Cats, Into the Woods).
- The hammier, the better! :D |
